Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary - Lettuce Lake

Aquatic water lettuce plants blanket the appropriately named "Lettuce Lakes" of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Egrets and little blue herons were observed walking atop the lettuce, foraging in the plant’s vast roots that provide shelter for small fish and crayfish.

When the photo is first loaded you are looking from an elevated wooden boardwalk at a large area of aquatic water lettuce plants that blanket the appropriately named "Lettuce Lakes" of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Cypress and other trees border the Lake.

Navigating to the right, more of the Lettuce Lakes are seen beyond the covered, sitting/observation area. Continuing to the right, you see cypress trees growing behind the covered boardwalk.

As you continue the 360-degree turn to the image’s starting point, more of the covered, sitting/observation area and the Lettuce Lakes are seen.

Navigating up with your mouse, you see the wooden cover of the observation area with a partial view of the blue, partly cloudy sky. Navigating down, you see the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) web site logo, which is linked to the SOFIA main page (http://sofia.usgs.gov).
