Big Cypress Nature Trail

Navigate around this 360° view of the swamp surrounding the nature trail near Clyde Butcher's Big Cypress Gallery. Note the buttressed bases of the cypress trees, epiphytes ("air plants") and strangler figs. You might want to duck out of the way of the huge staghorn fern!

When the photo is first loaded you are looking down a slightly curved section of a raised-earthen trail. To the left of the trail you can see buttressed bases of cypress trees, and to the right you can see lush vegetation prospering in standing water.

Navigating to the right, a tangle of cypress trees and strangler figs are present. A bit further to the right, cypress trees with buttressed bases predominates on both the left and right sides of the trail.

Continuing to the right, a large, epiphytic staghorn fern grows along the trunk of a cypress tree. As you continue the 360-degree turn to the image’s starting point, cypress trees with buttressed bases and strangler figs grow in standing water.

Navigating up with your mouse, you can see sunlight pouring through the cypress canopy. Navigating down, you see the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) web site logo, which is linked to the SOFIA main page (http://sofia.usgs.gov).
