Implications
  • Decreasing the frequency of extreme water level events will increase alligator nesting
  • Restoring the natural variability of summer water levels will decrease flooding of alligator nests
  • Restoring a more natural hydroperiod will increase courtship and nesting of alligators.

What is the relationship between alligators, alligator holes and canals?

Everglades alligator survey routes

Implications

  • More and larger alligators are found in canals than marshes
  • Fewer alligator holes than expected are near canals.
  • When canals are filled in, the distribution and abundance of both alligators and alligator holes will change.

Next Next: How can alligators and crocodiles be used to evaluate the success of restoring freshwater flows to Everglades estuaries?
