What are the biological impacts of concern?
Part 2: Vegetation Changes Over Time in the Everglades
Pollen Profile at Nutrient-enriched Site
F1, WCA 2A
Around 1960, cattail abundance began
to increase to the highest recorded levels at the nutrient enriched
sites.
A single cattail seedling grown in nutrient
enriched areas expands dramatically. A seedling grown in unenriched areas
shows little or no expansion
Mesocosm experiments confirm that periphyton
losses along the gradient result from phosphorus additions.
John Henry Davis
map of Everglades vegetation
shows no cattail presence in area where cattail is abundant
today.
