This figure compares vegetation
maps within the same 70.5-km portion of Everglades National Park near the
Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower. Maps include the 1940 Davis Map
(a), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetland Inventory Map
(b), the Florida Land Use and Cover Map (c), the Florida Cooperative Fish
and Wildlife Research Unit GAP Analysis Project Map (d), and the current
Everglades Vegetation Mapping Project (e). |
Everglades Vegetation
Mapping Project
-
Developed specifically for quantitative delineation
of south Florida plant communities
-
Contains 89 plant communities and land-cover
classes specifically defined as associations that occur in southern Florida
-
Uses a three-level attributing convention
for each polygon (dominant, secondary, and tertiary)
-
Has 13 numeric modifiers such as altered drainage,
abandoned agriculture, heavy off-road use and hurricane damage which can
be added to each vegetation polygon
-
Can be collapsed for comparisons with other
vegetation classification systems
