Biscayne Bay:
How can the quantity, timing, and quality of freshwater inflow be improved to sustain healthy ecosystems in all parts of this bay that stretches from urban areas to wilderness?

Part 2: Biscayne Bay - Water Quality Threats

Intensive Development Caused Problems

Clean water used to meander from the Everglades into Biscayne Bay through small rivers, creeks, sloughs and the ground.

Pollution caused by littering, automobiles and poor housekeeping has degraded most water courses in the watershed. Huge areas of forests and grasslands have been paved over.

The types of pollutants found in Biscayne Bay relate to land uses in the watershed. North Biscayne Bay is affected by urban land uses. South Biscayne is affected by agricultural and industrial land uses.

Monitoring is Essential
