Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
Zone Monitoring Program

Highlights

Hypothesis-driven

Compare trends over time between fished (reference) & unfished (zoned) areas

Monitoring structure (abundance & size)and function (processes)

Performance Measures

  • Coral: coral cover and diversity will change significantly between the zones and reference sites
  • Algae: macroalgal cover and biomass will change significantly between the zones and reference sites
  • Fish & Lobster: average size and overall abundance will be greater within the zones
  • Human Values: perception of resource quality will be higher inside the zones, and overall compliance will improve over time
