- Title: Florida Bay Air:Sea CO2 Exchange Maps
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: maps
- Online_Linkage: <http://sofia.usgs.gov/projects/geo_monitor/maps/carbon-fluxes>
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The maps show the air:sea CO2 exchange in Florida Bay in April, June, August, November, and December 2001 and April 2002.
- Purpose:
-
The production and transport of biogenic carbonate sediments play a key role in developing mud banks and altering circulation patterns in Florida Bay. Accurate measurements of sediment accumulation and production rates are required to determine how these processes have changed during the last century in response to anthropogenic influences. Estimates of sediment accumulation rates and annual production rates based on standing crop and turnover of various calcifying species are available from previous research. Carbonate sedimentation and organic productivity (calcification, photosynthesis, and respiration) are most effectively determined from precise, in situ measurements of alkalinity, pH, temperature, conductivity, and air:sea CO2 and O2 gas fluxes.
The data collected were used to estimate the exchange of carbon dioxide in the surface waters of Florida Bay.

Air:sea exchanges were measured using a direct chamber method with a LiCor 6252 Infrared CO2 gas analyzer. Carbon dioxide rates reflect the linear slope with the best Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r2) calculated from a curve of approximately 900 data points.

The CO2 exchange is measured in n.mol.m-2.s-1 (nanomoles per square meter per second). The categores are: less than 400, -400 - -200, -200 - 0, 0 - 200, 200 - 400, and greater than 400. Negative values indicate transfer of CO2 from air to sea. Positive values indicate transfer of CO2 from sea to air.
