Modern Field Data

plot of temperature versus salinity

[larger image]

Temperature (ºC) versus salinity (ppt) recorded at sites from February 1996 through July 1999. Histogram on x axis shows frequency of observations in 5 ppt increments. Histogram on y axis shows frequency of observations in 5ºC increments. Bimodal nature of temperature readings reflects seasonality.

Maps showing 5 ppt salinity gradients and the prominent cluster designations from the presence-absence Q-mode analysis for the sampling periods from February 1996 through July 1999. Note the change that occurs in February 1998. Due in part to the strong ENSO effects, February 1998 looks more like a summer or "wet season" pattern, and July 1998 and 1999 look more like a winter or "dry season" pattern.

Map below is a composite of clusters illustrated for four year period shown in individual seasonal maps above. Composite shows maximum extent of cluster during period analyzed.
A Batillaria minima and/or Melongena corona Assemblage
C Brachidontes exustus Assemblage
D Pteria longisquamosa [= Pinctada radiata] and Modulus modulus Assemblage
F Turbo castanea, Tegula fasciata and Columbella spp., Assemblage
G Pinnidae Assemblage
