Big Cypress National Preserve Fish Inventory Database
Admin_Units: This table lists the administrative divisions of BICY. It is used to populate a field in the Sample Locations table. It contains 2 fields:
Admin_ID- this is a numeric field that serves as the primary key of the table and also links to the "Sample Locations" table
Unit- lists the BICY administrative units
Catch Info: Records of all individuals captured are stored in this table. An individual record represents a single species present in a sample. The total number of individuals of that species is recorded in one of this table's fields. The table contains a total of 24 fields:
Capture_ID- primary key field
Sample_ID- links to Sample Info table, and identifies the sample which generated the capture
Species_ID- this field is populated via a link to the "Speciestable" table. It records the species captured
Number- the total number of individuals of the species present in the sample
Length1 - Length20- the total length of up to 20 individuals of the species captured. If more than 20 individuals were present in a sample, 20 were selected at random and measured, and these measurements were taken to be representative of the overall sample population
Habitat_Types: This table lists the habitat categories used to define the communities sampled in BICY. The habitat types roughly correspond to those defined by Duever et al (1986). It contains 2 fields:
Habitat_ID- primary key field, also links to "Sample Locations" table
Habitat- contains the listing of habitat categories
Sample Info: Each record in this table identifies a single sampling event- for instance, an electrofishing transect or a single deployment of a given type of trap. The table consists of the following eight fields:
Sample ID- primary key field
Gear ID- this field is populated via a link to the "Sampling Gear Types" table. It identifies the method used to acquire the sample
Trip ID- this provides a link to the "Sampling Expedition Info" table and identifies the sampling trip from which each sample was drawn
Repetition Number- lists the repetition number for samples of which multiple repetitions were performed
Total Repetitions- total number of repetitions of a given sampling technique performed during the sampling trip
Duration- the length of time that sampling gear was deployed or used
Water Depth- the depth at which static pieces of sampling gear were deployed
Notes- a memo field for recording any other information regarding a sample
Sample Locations: Data describing the physical location of each sampling site are recorded in this table. The fields are as follows:
Site ID- primary key identifying each sample site
UTM North- the northing coordinate of each site, in UTM zone 17N, NAD83 meters
UTM East- the easting coordinate of each site, in UTM zone 17N, NAD83 meters
Admin ID- populated from the "Administrative Units" table
Habitat ID- populated from the "Habitat Types" table
Region- this field identifies the geographic region of Big Cypress in which a site was located. Any site located north of I-75 is identified as "North", while any site south of US 41 is identified as "South". The remaining sites are identified as "Central".
Sampling Expedition Info: Physical data for each sampling trip are recorded in this table. It consists of the following fields:
Trip ID- primary key identifying each sampling trip
Site ID- provides a link to the geographic information stored in the "Sample Locations" table. This data is segregated into a separate table to allow for the possibility of sampling the same site at different times.
Temperature- water temperature in degrees Celsius
Dissolved Oxygen- Mg/l of water column dissolved oxygen during sampling
Salinity- water column salinity, in PSU
pH- water column pH during sampling
Date- date of sampling trip
Time- time of sampling trip
Notes- memo filed for recording any other relevant information for each sampling trip
Sampling Gear Types: this table lists all sampling methods employed during this study. It contains 3 fields:
Gear ID- primary key
Method- the name of the sampling technique (ie, angling, cast net, etc)
Description- a fuller description of each sampling method
Speciestable: a master list of all species that are expected to occur in BICY. This table contains information that is used to populate fields in the Catch Info" table. It contains these fields:
Species ID- primary key
Species Name- The scientific name of each species, including both genus and species names
Genus- the genus of each species
Family- the family of each species
Common Name- the common name of each species
Voucher Info: this table contains information on all voucher specimens collected during this project. It contains the following fields:
Voucher ID- primary key
Species ID- the species of each voucher, populated via a link to the "Speciestable" table
Sample ID- the sample from which each voucher was drawn
